Stardew Valley Creator Reflects on Success and Future Plans
The creator of Stardew Valley, Eric Barone, also known as ConcernedApe, gave an interview on January 24, 2025, with NPR’s All Things Considered. In the interview, he talked about his first game, Stardew Valley, nearly nine years after its release. He mentioned that while working on a new project called Haunted Chocolatier, he continues adding new content to Stardew Valley.
The Success of Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is a farming and role-playing game. It is one of the best-selling games ever. As of December 2024, it had sold 41 million copies! Of these, 7.9 million were sold on the Nintendo Switch and 26 million on PC. It’s one of the top 20 most-sold games of all time.
Barone’s Commitment to Updates
One reason for the game’s success is the constant updates, like versions Stardew Valley APK 1.6, 1.6.14, and 1.5.
In an interview, Eric Barone said :
I don’t want to definitively say that the book is ever closed, because I think I will always have a desire to come back and maybe add a thing or two. You know, maybe even 50 years from now, I might add something.

Community Engagement and Feedback
In his interview with NPR, Eric Barone said:
I do take in a lot of what the fans are saying. I pay attention to what their thoughts are, what their criticisms are. And the players are very important to me. I mean, I will never forget that it’s because of the players that I’m in this position, that the game was able to be popular, that my dreams as a game developer have come true.

Eric Barone agrees that his work on Stardew Valley is his way of thanking the fans. He kept working on the game as a way to give back to them. He also said he loves turning his real-life experiences into the game’s world and adding a lot of love to it.
Future of Stardew Valley and New Projects
In the interview, he also said:
I think a game can have too much content. And I ultimately want Stardew Valley to be the best game it can be. So if I feel like it’s starting to become kind of overwhelmed with content to the point where it’s detrimental to the game’s entertainment factor, I would stop at that point.

He added, “I want to make more than one game in my life. As time passes, I’ve worked on Stardew Valley for over 12 years. I also said it would be funny if I release an update when I’m 90 years old if I live that long. Let’s hope for that!”
